Thanks - good tip there on the printed BP. I called the GGL line and got connected to what I think is the supervisor/manager straight away (name begins with a P). She said it was showing as an Advanced Passenger Info failure in FLY. I'll get my friend to double check their passport details but if all else fails, we will be at LHR 5 or 6 hours before departure anyway, so there should be plenty of time to get it sorted.
if they are travelling on an ESTA, make sure they have access to their approved ESTA. It may be some link between ESTA and the booking that, maybe a name issue or similar that means BA is getting a no esta response. might not be
