Damaged baggage claim dilemma: Ferry service codeshared with Cathay

I flew from Lax earlier this October on a CX flight and my baggage was checked through to ZYK (Shenzhen shekou harbor), by booking a codeshared ferry service as part of a combined Cathay ticket .

I was unfortunate to find my baggage damaged when I arrived at ZYK and immediately filled the claim form at the counter. Several days later, the skypier staff replied my email, saying they have done nothing wrong after investigation and suggested me buying a better suitcase next time. I then submitted a claim online via Cathay, and they told me that “it is usual practice that when more than one carrier participated in the carriage of a passenger, the last carrier is responsible for processing the baggage claim to the conclusion with the passenger”. Clearly, both Cathay or skypier intend to take no responsibility of my damaged baggage.

I am not sure if Warsaw Convention is still eligible to be applied in this case. Skypier seems to be very unfamiliar to this and Cathay even refuses to take this case.

What do Cathay experts make of this? I have no idea now and any suggestion would be appreciated. Thanks guys.
