My temporarily "disabled" experience
Boarding an airplane is not the only roadblock to a disabled person's travel experience. A few years ago, my wife became sick during a trip and had emergency surgery, and several days after recuperating, we traveled home. We returned the rental car, and the car rental van took us to the passenger drop-off point. It was deathly cold and windy that day in Detroit, and the rental van driver didn't want us to get off and walk the few steps to the airport entrance door, so he called for an attendant with a wheelchair to pick us up. He then called his central office to advise that he will be "out of service" for a while, until the wheelchair arrives. Once inside, we asked the wheelchair attendant if we could have the wheelchair for me to push my wife around, and we'll leave it at our gate prior to boarding, she agreed. The airport employees couldn't have been nicer and more accommodating. Kudos to DTW and their workers!
