There's not much we can do other than avoid the area where they are reported. By the time we see them, it's too late to react.

The airports put a lot of effort into keeping birds away.

As far as the warning in the ATIS, almost ever airport's ATIS has that warning in it. I'm guessing that the FAA's legal department put that in. Just more "fine print".
