The ironic thing about Hyatt's gaming of the system is that I have actually become better off because of this! For the past years post-COVID, I have frequented Shanghai; half the time, I need to be in Puxi and the other half in Pudong. In Puxi, I will spend a full day in the office, and only need a basic room to sleep in. The Hyatt Place Tianshan Plaza, and more recently, the Caption or Centric have been good enough. I will choose the Centric when I feel like burning an SUA. Previously, I might have gone to Hyatt Global Harbour, but have not returned since they have started withholding suites from SUA inventory. I am saving quite a bit on the room rates!
If I need to be on the Pudong side, it is usually because I have business guests who prefer that area, or I myself need to be in the area. Before PH Shanghai started playing games with suites inventory, I would try to burn most of my SUAs there. I would book a room at average rates of CNY 1,800 - 2,000/night, x 4-7 nights per stay. If I know that I will actually need to be in the hotel for meetings, I would then book a conference room for 1-2 days. All in all, I think this would generate some reasonable revenue for the hotel. I have not returned to the PH for two years. As I posted above, I have turned to Pudong Shangri-La for my stays in that area. Average room rate CNY 1,100/night. For the past few months, I have been upgraded to a nicely-furnished, and good size room (bigger than some other hotel's Junior suites). I have been given complimentary Horizon Club access, and have been able to use their meeting room FOC for 4 hours per day. (I then order some F&B during such meetings, to generate some revenue for the Lounge.) But overall, compared to my spending at the PH vs now at the Shangri-La, I have saved a ton of money, and this all helps my company's travel budget! As I said, I am much better off, and happier about it!
