I remember HKIA does have Ferry to Macao, but it is for transit only and once you enter through customs and arrival hall, you can't get on it. Is that still true today? Can I pick up my son at the airport and take the airport ferry to Macao instead of having to travel to Central?
Thanks
It has always been inside the transfer area as long as I can remember.
From their official website:
"
Passengers looking to take a ferry to the Mainland China or Macao should proceed to the ferry ticketing counter at Transfer Area E2. DO NOT go through immigration and reclaim your baggage. Passengers who have gone through immigration procedures CANNOT return to the ferry ticketing counter and use the ferry service."

BTW, most people in Hong Kong and Macau speak some English (some are even fluent), especially those who work at airports and ferry terminals. The fact that he doesn't speak Chinese should not be an issue.
