I just got a friend upgraded recently using this, but inadvertently. Couldn't see a seat available on the new flight after a disruption. The TAs and PSL agents couldn't either. I called in about 5 odd hours before the flight to take a chance again, and while I couldn't see an available seat, the agent could make the upgrade to the last available seat.
This was on a redemption ticket where my status carried through.
