Because people want status on multiple carriers. Those who are not hub captives or corp contracts have a choice of airlines and we want elite perks on all of them. I have elite status on all the alliances so I just pick the best routing and price. In the old days it made sense to stick with one carrier when you were almost guaranteed free F upgrades. No need to do so now that those have largely disappeared.

Yeah I am shocked at how popular the Rio is with the Hyatt folks and many just to get a free breakfast. I used to stay here all the time when it first opened (full disclosure: I worked on the financing) and often enjoyed free rooms when Harrahs ran the place. But no way I would stay there now - it needs a massive renovation. A weekend would be torture - 60 nights would make me suicidal.
