OP's comments might be a tad overdramatic, as it's often the case here on Flyertalk, but it's undeniable that if the DfT reduced its stance on re-screening of bags coming from secure locations (even domestic bags are re-screened!!!) and allowed direct airside transfers for some destinations, as is the norm the world over, the experience in T5 would be a LOT better.

But alas...
