That's different from the usual practice with portable credit card readers in the U.S., where the server will usually present the device to the diner with a "select a tip amount" screen showing.
I think it also depends a lot on where and in which restaurants you eat. I have often asked if they can add a tip and was told that it is unfortunately not possible.
