The “upgrade” from Basic Economy to Main Cabin on AA isn’t as cheap as the upgrade from HBO on BA - with family members on the same PNR it’s a reasonable outlay. I’ve changed plans - we’ll fly AA direct from LHR and qualify for free checked luggage et al.
