I would say the Drakensburg is significantly more visually impressive however it does require more driving. It's 4+ hours from Johannesburg - and if you come from the coast some pretty bad roads too.

Fort a first time visitor the Cape, Garden Route and Kruger is the classic itinerary and for good reason as it gives you a good chunk of the highlights in a pretty easy to digest package.
