I am very impressed that you can do self-transfer with checked luggage in 2 hours, so you may well be able to pull it off here as well. I'm just leery of doing something like that on separate tickets .....
I did it pre-covid on a flight from US connecting to Asia, and I was sweating bullets with a 3-hour connection with only hand luggage, but that's me

In the US at least, usually J so first off the plane, never waited more than 1-2 minutes at Immigration, bags always come out in the first 10min or so and I'm basically just at the mercy of how far I have to walk or changing terminals. At LAX in my experience its arguably the worst since you spend about 15 minutes just walking before you exit customs, and maybe another 15 min walking from one terminal to the further ones, but yeah about 2 hours (and the last few times thats been with our baby too, so add maybe 5 minutes waiting for the gate-check stroller though that just eats up the 10min waiting for bags at the carousel). Might just be lucky, all it takes is one major delay.
YVR Cockroach gives me exactly the detail I need to paint a picture of the process and make an informed decision with my own risk tolerance though, thanks!
