Please post your IHG Rewards Experiences 2024

Holiday Inn – the niu tab Düsseldorf Main Station

What is your Priority Club status?
Ambassador Diamond

Were you (or for multi-stayers are you generally) happy with the hotel/stay?
In general yes.

I only needed a room for three nights as my office is in Düsseldorf and short three stop subway ride away. The hotel opened 2001 and was at this time the largest “niu Hotel” of Novum Hospitallity with 428 rooms.

I have been in the lobby a couple of times, as a colleague of me stayed there frequently while I was in the Holiday Inn Express Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof which is located across the street from this hotel.

As we all know, Novum Hospitaliy gave up their independence and joined IHG. As I was in the need for a hotel for three nights I looked about my options. Due to long office days, I looked at Holiday Inn Express and Hampton-Inn but the Holiday Inn the niu Tab Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof was with 72 EUR the cheapest option. And the rate including 2k points was only 9 EUR more expensive.

The area around the hotels is not the nicest part of Düsseldorf but I would not consider it as unsafe. This is currently redeveloped. However, there is not much regarding restaurants close to the hotel. The old town is four stops by subway and thus from my point of view the hotel is also in a good location if you would like to discover Düsseldorf but not stay in a more expensive hotel in the city centre.

The check-in desks is opposite the entrance. Three desks are available to check-in guest, and all were staffed on this Tuesday afternoon. There was no waiting time. The reservation was retrieved from the system. The agent thanked me for being IHG One Rewards Diamond Member and mentioned that I was his first Diamond guest. I asked for a room away from the elevator and he searched for one. He even showed me the layout and pointed out the available rooms. As I also wanted I higher floor, I went with the one he suggested. It was not far away but I knew from colleagues that there was a door to the hallways and blocking noise.

In general, this was a very personal and nice experience. I was asked if I like breakfast, beverage or points as amenity and I went with the beverage. I needed to be in the office at 05:30 and breakfast was not available before 06:30.

A keycards were programmed, and I was on my way to the room. Elevators are to the front of the hotel

First impression, overall friendly and again kind of relaxed. It was not busy, but there was a steady stream of new guests checking in or demanding information.

On the ground floor are lounge chairs, and the bar. A small terrace is also available, many tables and chairs in different layout offer an open plan area. A area in front of the TV is available The breakfast restaurant is also located on the ground floor. But as mentions I skipped breakfast, as I had to leave before breakfast was offered.

And as some of you already mentioned, the arrangement of the public space is similar to Moxy, but not quite as fancy as the Marriott brand.

(Breakfast is served starting at 06:30 till 10:30 on weekdays and 07:00 till 11:30 on weekends)

I had two beers on the last day of my stay. They have Fiege Bräu on tab (quite rare in Düsseldorf, as it is a local brewery from Bochum). I used my voucher. The agent had to ask front staff what I could chose and everything on the beverage list was available. I went with a beer, despite the wine list is also quite good with five red and white wines available as well as cocktails. I could not charge the second beer to my room due to some technical problems, so the barkeeper just offered it on the house. I assume that it was due to my Diamond Status which was mentioned on the voucher and the staff was kind of exalted about the status which was kind of weird.

There is no fitness center.

Check-Out was friendly on the early morning. The invoice was printed as requested-

Which room did you book, and which upgrade did you receive?
I booked the cheapest room a Standard Room (19 square metres) on a fully flexible rate and I received this room. The hotel also offers Premium Rooms (27 suqare metres) but not other room type. I was fine with no upgrade. And to be honest, as this was a sleep only stay, I did not really need a larger room. And a number of hotels did not upgrade me on longer stays.

How are the rooms?

My room was located on the 7th floor. There are two doors between the elevator landing and the rooms, which limited the noise. Nevertheless I would avoid rooms with X01 / X24

The room does follow the typical layout. One is in a quite long hallway leading to the room. There were three hooks in the hallway to hang jacket but no hangers.

The bathroom could be accessed from the hallway. It consists of shower, sink and toilet. Storage space next to the sink was limited, but the shelf in front of the mirror was large enolught. Hairdryer was available on a hook in the bathroom. Mirror was not heated, but the bathroom has an heated floor. Very nice in the early morning. I was an electrical option, which turned itself off. You need to turn it off in the morning and again on in the evening to have a warm floor in the morning (I have conventional heated floor in my flat which is always warm which is why I dislike this version of heated floors). No bathrobe and slippers. Some hooks in the bathroom were available to hang utensils, but none next to the sink.

There was no shower door which means water running on the floor could not be avoided.

Only bath foam / shampoo was provided as wall mounted bottles, lotion was missing which did not caught me by surprise as I had already experienced this in Frankfurt.

The bed was to the right-hand side oif the room. The bed were again two single beds moved together, so no king / queen bed with a single mattress. Two stools doubled as bedside table with wall mounted reading lamps. USB Plugs (USB A and USB C) were at both sides of the bed as part of the regular socket. Lights could be switched on / off from the bed.

Opposite the bed was the large TV and the mobile device could be connected via Bluetooth to the screen. There was no real desk but a small table next to the tv. Not really a place, if you need to do some real work. Two power outlets at the desk were available, which was nice.

There was not closed but a wardrobe with safe on the wall to the bathroom. No iron and ironing board.

Water pressure was very good. No phone in the room, no minibar or fridge and no kettle are provided.

The hotel is not that old, but the rooms show a little bit of wear, but nothing serious. The design is modern and remembers. Quality of furniture is good, but I found it inferior to Frankfurt. But I stayed in a Premium Room in Frankfurt rather than a Standard room.

The advanced rate was 54 EUR / night; the best flexible 63 EUR. 2k points were 9 EUR and 5k bonus points were 18 EUR. This was booked a week before my stay. The hotel is available for as low as 54 EUR and sometimes even lower. This is a good value for money, if you only need a bed.

How is the exec. lounge?
N/A

What was good and what was bad?
Good
Good connection to public transport
Staff is friendly and helpful
Room rates
Design
Large public spaces
Water Pressure

Neutral
keycard needed for power and room
No kettle
No lotion in bath

Bad
no real desk and desk chair
but given the room rate nothing

Value for $ or Priority Club Points? Would you return?
The location is good, and staff is friendly. The room rates offer a very good value for money is very good.

Rooms are okay. Design is modern, though the room are small and do not have amenities like kettle, phone or ironing board. The missing real desk could be an issue for some business-travellers.

I will return, as it offers a good value for money (the HIX next door is more expensive) and if you only need a room for the night or arrive later, spend the evening elsewhere and leave the next morning and do not need the amenities, then this is a good option.

My person caveat is that breakfast is only available at 06:30. The Holiday Inn Express and Hampton offer it starting from 06:00 (and if you ask nicely even earlier) and sometimes I am able to have an early breakfast. But the higher room rates might not justify it.

As my stays in Düsseldorf are usually heavy workload stays with an early start and late finish, my preferences are slightly different than in one cities on business trips. In so far I will chose this hotel for longer stay (unlike the one in Frankfurt)
