My father did this for about a year in 2000-2001 (pre-9/11), commuting from Hilo to Honolulu. He'd buy a monthly pass from Hawaiian, and I remember going in with him at least once to the city ticket office in Hilo with his work schedule for the month and booking the flights. Buy the pass twice in a year and you earned Pualani Platinum status, so he was upgraded on a lot of those flights. This was also prior to smartphone boarding passes; in Hilo they'd have is boarding pass printed and waiting for him at the first class check in counter. On the way home he could check in the Premier Club lounge (where the Plumeria Lounge is today; the current HNL Premier Club back then was Aloha's lounge), since at the time boarding passes weren't required to pass through the security checkpoint. His overall commute time was less than a lot of people have in places like Los Angeles, and he wasn't stuck driving in traffic.
