I'm in the middle of researching flights for a trip this coming April. We currently have awards booked r/t to SYD, but I'm thinking of going to ICN on the return to visit family. There is no award availability on the desired dates, so I looked at what it would cost. I can book KE SYD-ICN-SEA for around $1,100 on the KE website. These flights aren't available on the AS website. So I did some additional searches to see what was available. It was rather disappointing. I found was no availability on partner airlines flying from their hubs (e.g., SYD-ICN, SYD-TYO, SYD-HKG). Even TYO-SEA flights showed up only when I searched for r/t itineraries SEA-TYO-SEA, otherwise routing through DOH if you search for TYO-SEA-TYO. So they attempt to force you to use the AS website to purchase flights that will give you the most EQM, but provide no availability. They didn't even have something that was at a crazy high rate, which is what I was expecting this rant to be about. ...? This is where I wish I could use some really crude analogies, but I was raised to be a gentleperson... This is clearly something that'll have to be resolved if they hope to route reservations through their systems. Until then, it has very limited utility.
