You could always try the old trick of booking A and C, hoping nobody slots himself into B, but with one of you prepared to offer to switch seats with any perverse interloper who does so. Alternatively review the situation at check-in: if B is taken you can proceed as above, or ask the agent if she can find you a better pair of seats: and repeat the exercise at the gate.
