When I traveled to MZ recently I used the visa on arrival procedure, demonstrating I met all the visa requirements, but upon arrival and not before travel at an embassy or by applying for an e-visa.
It's a relatively new program. You shouldn't have needed a visa at all, but I'm sure Moz was happy to take your money if you wanted to purchase one.
