And it has to be the right kind of $$$. UA wants its GS members to pay for the highest fare classes.
Pretty sure a frequent flyer with a good spend but mostly on discounted air fares will have a much lower chance of getting GS, than a less frequent flyer with the same spend but with refundable, top-dollar flights.
