One further question - I need to contact the hotel to tell them I am now not turning up until tomorrow.

Will BA pay tonight's hotel cost in Faro?

The hotel booking was cancellable until a week ago and I am yet to be charged anything on my credit card. I am waiting until after 9am to call their reservations team to see if they can amend the booking to just pay for 6 nights instead of 7 but I suspect that I will have to pay the full cost.
No problem, I know the feeling.

Legally speaking it's a bit of a grey zone, Article 19 of the Montreal Convention does allow for some losses caused by delay to be recovered but it's not always clear-cut. I would suggest putting in a claim with BA if the hotel charges you for the full 7 nights, and if they refuse it then it will be a travel insurance job.
