Just wanted to add my two cents on this hotel, as it is one that doesn’t have too many reviews and the general consensus is rather negative. That’s why I went into this one with quite low expectations, and I am happy to report that while the hotel has its issues, it definitely exceeded my expectations by some distance.
So, we took a 1-week trip to Phu Quoc and decided to spend our first 3 nights in the Sheraton. The location of this hotel is definitely not ideal. It is on the north west corner of the island, which is the new development including the Vinwonder theme park and Vinpearl Safari. Other hotels in the general vicinity include a few different Vin Pearl hotels, a Radisson Blu, Wyndham, and Crowne Plaza. This hotel used to be a Vin Pearl before being reflagged as a Sheraton.
This whole area is quite bizarre. It has clearly been developed for a tourism boom that hasn’t quite materialized yet. It is filled with vacant shopfronts, Venetian style canals, and wide open streets. I imagine that this area will fill up in years to come, but at the moment it is very, very bare. You would be well-advised to stop at a supermarket on the way to the hotel, as there aren’t a ton of options around to buy drinks or snacks.
Now, on to the hotel. The building itself is enormous and quite imposing. As others have mentioned, the style is quite Soviet-like. All of the guest rooms are located in the main 8-story building, with the area surrounded by villas, which are also part of the hotel. You definitely want ocean-view here, which provides a great view and beautiful sunrises.
The rates here are incredibly good value. I wanted to make sure we got a suite, so I went ahead and booked their highest suits category, which is the Senior Ocen View Suite. As a Plat, I had hoped to maybe get an upgrade to a villa, but that was not to be. Since I had already booked the highest room category, there was no further upgrade. 3 nights in our suite set us back about VND 10.5m / USD 420. Our rate included breakfast, and upon check in I was offered the welcome gift which included the 1,000 points, red or white bottle of wine, 6 pack of beer, 30-minute foot massage, and some kind of dessert or cake.
The suite itself was very spacious, coming in at 80 square meters. It has a full size living room with a guest bathroom. Then it has a very spacious bedroom and master bathroom, which has a separate bath and shower. Bath amenities are the standard Sheraton offering of Gilchrist & Soames, which I like. 2 TVs in the room, both of which were smart TVs with Netflix, YouTube, etc. The room looked quite dated in the pictures, but I didn’t feel that at all when we arrived. Everything felt fresh and well-maintained and was perfectly comfortable. There was also a Nespresso machine in the room. There was a welcome gift of chocolates and Longan fruit in the room when we arrived. They also prepared a birthday cake during my stay, which was thoughtful and showed attention to detail.
Breakfast was a highlight for me, although it was very busy at peak times. Very extensive buffet offering, including a Pho station, grilled meats, Indian offerings, and all the other usual breakfast offerings. There was a barista to make coffee, and well as self-serve machines and dispensers for Vietnamese style coffee. They also had pancake making sessions for kids where they made pancakes that looked like cartoon characters. We also ordered room service a couple of times, food was overpriced like any other hotel, but the quality was very good. The pizza was probably the best room service pizza I have had. We also had the dinner buffet one night, which had a good spread, and it also had a drinks package for all you can drink beer, wine, and spirits.
The pool was absolutely enormous, although didn’t really have any charm. It was one large pool in the middle, flanked by two smaller pools on either side. Nice swim up pool bar in the middle and food and drinks could be ordered to poolside or beach. Beach was not bad, but the water was not super clear, compared to some other parts of the island.
For kids, there was a kids play room, as well as two outdoor playgrounds.
There is a dedicated free public bus that goes from the hotel to the various points like the theme park and safari park. There is also always taxis waiting outside and Grab is easy to book as well.
Overall, I think for the price, this hotel has a strong offering. Rooms were comfortable, although lacking character, and the food was good. Service was just okay, with English skills being quite weak across the staff. I imagine it’s still a work in progress, but I did really enjoy the stay.
