I still haven't fully thrown in the towel on finding something fun to drive, though. When poking around the Japanese version of the Toyota site, I found an option for the Toyota GR86.
I rented the GR86 in Mishima to drive to Gotemba/Mt Fuji. It is a very fun car, going up and down the road to the 5th station on Mt Fuji was awesome in October with basically no other cars on the road.
I was able to book in English on Toyota's website.
Calling in English probably won't work but I only dealt with staff in Mishima, they used Google Translate to communicate, Tokyo locations might be better luck.
I was able to find a GR86 at the Tokyo Station Nihonbashi exit for Nov 26 8am - 28th 8pm just to test out why you might not be seeing it at all. Hope you can find one for your dates.
