The current land-based wifi is going away, there's no doubt about that. The only question is which satellite system will replace it.
And I'm excited for it. Can't come soon enough, but I am feeling like Delta may be behind on this. I probably take at least one flight a week on an E175, and I haven't found one with upgraded wifi yet, which admittedly could just be luck of the draw.
