It definitely is random (as a nothing but the stuff they mail MM member and my own shot of the plane map when I hit the magic mile number 200 miles out from landing), but hopefully and maybe improving with some degree of consistency. It certainly has nothing to do with spend (as someone who loves the 1K spend qualification) unless you mean recognize less. Interestingly, If I call a phone agent they seem to be the only group that recognizes MM or length of MP membrship and genuinely seem interested in you long-time flying habits (and maybe the challenge of long-time flier so confused they decided to phone the expert).
