The reason seems to be clear. Cut costs by no longer giving points or miles for every stay/flight for something many people would do anyway, and instead given them options to spend points/miles/rewards that otherwise would incur other costs.

It would be interesting to know what the cost to Hyatt is when you choose AA Gold at 70 nights, and how it compares to, say, 10k Hyatt points.
