I actually use the AA loyalty program even though I mostly fly AS on domestic westcoast flights (I am in the Pacific Northwest) because AA lets me "augment" my flight earnings through other means. Most of my loyalty points are actually not from flying AA or even AS at the moment. Shopping, credit cards, Hyatt (RIP), various promos/bonuses, car rentals ... It all adds up.
My 70 night choice with Hyatt - if I ever got there, which is highly unlikely - would probably 10k Hyatt points.
Right now, almost never. But I head down to SAN often, and I would happily use AS rather than WN.
Look, I’m not trying to argue this is a good change. I get it’s not great for many. Just trying to speculate reasons for the move. I’m neither here nor there about it, but I’m awash in points and SUAs and genuinely wouldn’t mind the AA Gold. That’s all.
