Assuming you're flying to or from mainland China, stopping by a physical check-in counter is pretty much mandatory (yes, I know there are rare exceptions). One of the main reasons I'm willing to pay a slight premium to book via ctrip (usually, it's about the same price, though) is precisely because I find them to be infinitely easier to deal with than most airlines in Asia.
