I am a Star Alliance Gold member if that factors into your decision.
OP, you may well have flown at this point. If so, I hope it worked out to your satisfaction.
In the event you have not, or to anyone in a similar situation (*Gold, no checked luggage, shopping for short-haul regional Y flights) my take is: no, SQ isn't worth 4x more. Is it worth double? You have to ask yourself the following questions:
- Is lounge access something you'd be willing to pay for? Yes or no. If yes, how much more?
- What about Fast Track, priority check-in and boarding? Bangkok airports are as busy as they've ever been, and *Gold are treated pretty well at Suvarnabhumi, which brings me to...
- Do you have a preference of airport flying out of Bangkok? If yes, is it Don Mueang (Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion) or BKK (SQ, Scoot, JQ)?
If it's no to all of the above, then yes, you should go with whichever carrier is offering the best price.

Personally, I will not set foot on Jetstar or AK (AirAsia MY) either as I find the service ethos of these airlines -- and, in particular, the attitudes of their ground staff -- to be appalling even by the standards set by a lifetime of enduring US carriers. FD (Thai AirAsia), on the other hand, is a fine LCC: never had issue with them in 20 years, and if I need a last minute SIN-DMK it's my go-to -- quite enjoy the T4 departure experience too. Fast and no fuss.

Ah, TG... you never quite know what you're going to get

My last ex-BKK regional coach on THAI in the 777 was great (possibly better than my last J flight with on
that B788). It did seem like they were really making an effort and things had improved since the last couple years. Fares can be pretty OK on the BKK-SIN (usually cheaper ex-SIN) route as they're locked in competition with SQ until the end of time.

Exactly. Is it worth 4x more? Nope. 3x more? Depends on the circumstances... 2x more? For me, yes, that reliability and consistency is worth paying double for, no matter the duration of the flight.
