Most of my travel is within North America. The places I need lately to go seem to often have good P fares, so I just buy J if it makes sense. If there's no cheap P I usually use flight passes, which even for a flex pass don't need many credits. With the new 6 credit passes you can earn more credits from buying the pass than you can burn if it's a short flight (12 credits earned for buying the pass, 1 credit used for each flight).
That leaves plenty for my one or two overseas trips per year.
I'm also certainly not flying in Y very often, It's probably been more than 10 years since I've flown Y on a flight longer than 3 hours. I did have to fly PY last week YVR-YUL.
Also lately I've managed to delay selecting my privileges until the later half of the year, which means I've been starting each year with lots from the prior year.
