It's having to fly a route that takes more than twice as long as scheduled. They would not be doing that and paying for all that extra fuel if it was under their control. By all means write in and do let us know how you get on. I suspect you won't be getting much though, if anything.

If you had only found out at airport check in, yes you would have been rebooked, and no you wouldn't have been given a hotel for a transit of less than 8 hours.
