It doesn't really matter what the reason is per say, there is no scope for EU/UK style 261 compensation and QR isn't really one for "gestures". You might get some refreshment vouchers out of them at Doha?!

It's possible the agent just doesn't know the reason why the flight has been amended rather than them being obstructive - although you seem to have guessed the reason.
