A couple of days ago, I was about to change my seats and realised that the arrival time in DOH had been changed.
GYD - EDI arrival time had been moved to three hours later. This means I would have missed my connecting flight DOH - EDI. The app asked me to accept the changes or apply for a refund.
I had received no email or SMS by QR. I called and asked for an explanation. The reason is clearly to avoid Iranian and Iraqi airspace. The flight departs at the same time, but takes 5h45m to get to DOH instead of 2h30m. The operator over the phone said she couldn't disclose the reason of the operational change.
The customer support operator moved me to the following flight DOH - EDI. Instead of landing at 6:30 on 14 October, I will land at 13:10. The layover will be much longer, roughly 5h30m instead of roughly 2h.
Does it make sense to ask for compensation to QR?
1. I wasn't informed of the changes.
2. The changes were made by the airlines just a few days of the expected departure. I had checked the flight status on 8 October and there was no change at the time.
3. My arrival time is significantly different from the initial one. I will arrive 7 hours later.
I don't think Qatari legislation provides for statutory compensation in these cases, like EU or UK legislation.
However, I was wondering whether QR would provide some sort of compensation taking into account that what has occured is related to their operational changes a few days before the expected departure. Moreover, they did not inform me at all and I would have realised that a change had occured only upon checking in. Would QR have provided accomodation or some sort of rerouting in such a case?
Thank you.
QR will correctly maintain that the the change in timing IS OUTSIDE of its control, just as an ATC issue is outside of its control.
Don't expect any monetary compensation.
