Airbus’ a350 isn’t that dissimilar to the 777X. BA have already expressed a level of disinterest in the a350 by choosing more 787 orders instead of choosing the a350.
I think BA are only going for the 787s because RR is being a d**k. Look at their engine order, they've switched from RR to GE. If RR was being good, then I think BA would've ordered more A350s. It's not the model that they're uninterested in, it's RR thats putting them off from purchasing more. I can only imagine how much this is stressing BA out, as they're probably wanting to get their fleet size up. Their only choice is to either wait for the 777x to arrive which keeps getting delayed, or pay extortionate fees for the RR engines on the A350. The question is, how much longer are they willing to keep on going like this for before they say enough is enough. Other airlines have announced their frustrations with Boeing. There could be some cancelations for the 777x and more A35K orders. If BA are thinking of switching, they need to do it soon otherwise they won't be able to get a decent delivery timeslot.

I agree that Airbus could've used this as an opportunity to stretch the A350-1000. I don't think that will win any extra orders unless RR can provide a better deal, or unless one of the other engine manufacturers offer an engine for the stretched A350. Hopefully IF airbus does go ahead and make an A350neo, they get GE to provide engines and cut RR out, or have options between the 2.
