I absolutely see the
many potential pitfalls here. The rules are pretty clear and there are enough variables (Visa requirements, codeshare flights operating on metal that was unexpected, fare classes that don't qualify to name a few) that one has to be VERY careful about every step of the way on this. Heck - I'm looking at starting out EWR-MEX and most of the itineraries I find show as operated by DL and AM. That looks great until one drills down far enough to realize that while it says AM a good number of the flights are all actually operated by DL.
