The bags will normally transfer over, that's all in the bar code. Since the bags may have now gone to another terminal already I would not ask for the bags back now, unless it has happened in the last 2 minutes. The thing they do need to do is ask AC tomorrow for confirmation that they can see the bags on their system.
Happy to be corrected, but I believe the best thing to do is ask your son to get the agent to actually scan the barcode itself. Methinks that triggers something in the system to ensure it is loaded, so better than just asking the agent to look at a screen.
