Some may remember the commuter pass (and later Travel Plan) offerings from Aloha and Hawaiian that either offered unlimited neighbor island travel or a fixed amount of segments during a 12 month period. It was offered in acknowledgement of the large number of residents who need to commuted between the islands.
I worked with someone in Honolulu who lived on the Big Island. He would normally commute to Honolulu each week and maybe send a few nights at a crash pad rather than fly every day. But, I am sure there are those who do.
