I guess when it came time for Hyatt to collect management fees or conduct an audit, and the numbers did not add up, it probably triggered whatever actions Hyatt is taking now. There was also a brief mention of the wave of bans back in March/April, which I remember reading about on social media. I believe most of the reports came from GOH recipients. Imagine being gifted a GOH, only to find yourself locked out of your account a few days later. I think many of them eventually got their accounts reinstated though.
Actually Chinese Hyatts know the market well and did a really good job to crack down the GOH trade. When ppl check in with reservations using GOH, the front desk of some hotels will ask if the GOH was bought online and they are willing to give you suites if you provide details of the seller. Then they report the information to Hyatt and Hyatt bans the seller's account.
