If one of you is Gold / Emerald, and in the same cabin, then you can use TCP to enable seat selection, there are quite a lot of threads on that specific issue, and examples of how it works (slowly, in summary). TCP itself, as correctly represented by the OP's query, is not primarily about seat selection though, it can be used for groups in different cabins.
