Remember, I only do HOM-CHI 1x/year for CSE, and haven't in a few years due to covid & then conflict on dates. Last year I redeemed points for business RT HOM-CHI (and last year biz still got you into the ML for free). Any points I earn on this trip I'll save for future Chicago trip or, if I get the train bug, start saving towards future long haul.

Think you are doing the right thing. I do not use points for relatively short trips, but save them for long sleeper trips myself.
If you do get the "train bug" you should think about getting the Amtrak Guest Rewards credit card. It can be a generous source of AGR points and one of the few ways those of us not living on the Northeast Corridor can generate a significant number of points.
