2024 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Ride Report

I was excited to see a >$100,000 vehicle on the EE aisle in the Jeep Grand Wagoneer. I had driven the Wagoneer before but not the Grand.

I hate to say it, but I was disappointed. The regular Wagoneer is kind of tiring to drive. It handles like the massive vehicle it is, unlike the Expedition, which feels much more nimble. The Grand did have a few more bells and whistles but wasn't all that different than the regular model.

The car I got was the extended wheelbase with a blackout appearance package. It generally looks sharp on the exterior. (These are not my pictures but they are of the same vehicle I got.)

The interior was not as premium as I expected, with lots of hard plastics and piano black. The seats are rather hard and uncomfortable. This model has the widely adjustable seats with massage function, controlled inexplicably by capacitive touch buttons in the door rather than physical buttons. Lumbar is controlled through the touch screen and was hard to use. The massage doesn't actually feel that nice, though it helped slightly with fatigue during a long drive.

Other cabin niceties are the panoramic sunroof with an additional sunroof over the third row; a center console in the second row with a screen that does nothing but control the climate, as far as I could tell; a passenger display in the dash with HDMI input; and heated and cooled seats.

Mine had adaptive cruise with lane centering which performed pitifully. It barely worked at all to keep me in the lane even with the most sensitive settings applied. It does have full self parking - it steers and drives itself into spaces it detects.

It also had a dynamic suspension which can raise or lower the vehicle on demand. By default, when parking it goes to the lowest level and extends power running boards. This actually did make it quite a bit easier to step in the car and I'm sure would be useful off road.

The driving experience was mediocre. It doesn't have great body control so the cabin sloshes around a lot. Steering is heavy. Acceleration and torque are uninspiring. The driving assistance features are subpar. I got 18 MPG on the highway, and it demands 91 octane. It was just plain tiring to drive for five hours, something which I have not found to be true with the Expedition/Navigator.

After having driven the Navigator, Escalade, and now Grand Wagoneer, I would rank them as follows.

Interior - Navigator 1st, Escalade 2nd, Grand Wagoneer 3rd
Exterior: Grand Wagoneer 1st, Navigator 2nd, Escalade 3rd
Driving: Navigator 1st, Grand Wagoneer 2nd, Escalade 3rd

I cannot rate the off road capabilities based on my highway slog, but I'm sure the Jeep would win that category.

Overall, the Grand Wagoneer doesn't feel all that special. There are some Hyundais which feel more luxurious than this. The Navigator and even the Expedition blow it out of the water in every way.
