I’m not really sure what the question is, tbh. I’m not sure if MX destinations are covered by the joint venture, so that may be your issue with Cancun.
More generally, I’m not going to write a treatise on here so I suggest poking around on ITA matrix and actually looking at the fare summary page. Discounted business needing discounted business bucket (many actually don’t on some connections) and discounted
first would needing discounted first on connections would be the same case, but if only business is available you’re already paying for a superior cabin so you generally get any space in business.
