What do you experienced travlers say? Rent a car vs. public transport or buses?

Staying at Beachscape Kin Ha with public parking. Really only want one day at Chiten Itza, grocery shopping, and transport from/to airport.

Normally would use taxis and a bus tour - just keep hearing bad experiences.
