NZ Gold was pretty easy to achieve and very handy when on sectors not served by OW, particularly flying SQ around Asia. The NZ domestic lounges are also great, far better than QF J lounges in Australia.
This is what I've been doing. Two return J trips between SYD and LHR/NY is enough to retain Qantas Platinum/OWE status. For everything else I try to fly *A. I've found United to be much better than AA for domestic US flights, and even gold status will get you plenty of free upgrades.
