Update:

After - naively - trying to negotiate a better comp than the 800,- - but of course getting absolutely nowhere, battling with generic bot-replies for several weeks - we eventually got a lawyer and sued Lufthansa for 75% of the full one way ticket price (which was about 15k on the day of our flight) as is this is the law.
This was January this year. Today was our court appointment - and Lufthansa accepted without contesting, meaning they're paying 75% of 15k plus any additional costs (court/lawyer). We have a legal insurance that covered our case so our downside risk was only €250,-.

All I can say is: get a lawyer and don't let them get away with their 800,- bs (I can only talk for Germany though, don't know how this works out in other countries).

Yes, we booked with points, but €800 seems way low - tell me how I can upgrade to First from Biz for that amount and I‘d do that any day.

Any ideas/experience with what is fair in a case like that?
