It's now been the case (showing on the AA website at the lowest award level) and BA agent can see and book the JFK-LAX as F award, but not showing as available to upgrade our existing ticket without cancelling and rebooking (not a good idea as F is no longer available on one of the TATL) . Agent tried to call the OW helpdesk and was then asked to send them an email detailing the circumstances, she did a phantom booking of the F seats hoping that they say yes and confirm and sounded like one of the best agents, knowledgeable and precise, so I am reasonably confident she's explained the situation well, but anything else we should do/try/suggest?

Obviously, transcon J is fine so not the end of the world, but it's still frustrating that those GUFs on AA are always frustrating. It's hard enough - nearly impossible much of the time - to get availability in the first place, so on the rare cases it does appear, if we can't get it... Thanks in advance for any suggestion...
Had similar issue last month when amazingly A upgrade spade freed up on a MIA-LAX 77W. Agent could see it but somehow wasn’t going through. Said he’d try with OW desk and call me back. I had a missed call a few hours later but checked my booking in the morning and it had all gone through so you’ll likely be fine.
