I just do some calculations for my recent SIN to DEN return trip.

From To Initial Heading Magnetic Heading Distance
SIN NRT 040° (NE) 040° (NE) 3,324 mi
NRT DEN 044° (NE) 052° (NE) 5,787 mi
DEN NRT 312° (NW) 305° (NW) 5,787 mi
NRT SIN 233° (SW) 241° (SW) 3,324 mi
Total: 18,223 mi. Airfare is USD 1,892.00 for Economy Class

This works out to be around USD 0.104 per mile. Double of the USD 0.05 rate you wrote. Is there a trick to get better airfare?
It would appear that the SIN-NRT and the NRT-SIN segments would not be on United metal (likely on ANA) and therefore those 6,648 miles would NOT count toward lifetime BIS miles, correct?
