This is one of those things where different frames of reference are in play.
Your bags are tagged to GLA so that's where they will go all other things being equal. (no LGW-LHR transfer or >24hrs so that's the default).
However when you arrive at LGW, you *can* ask to have them retreived if you need them.
I don't think they will hit the belt, so no point waiting for them there.
If the GLA tags had been removed they would be on the belt at LGW.
If it was me I'd just buy a toothbrush and move on
