I have two Tumi aluminum luggages. They survived 4 longhauls on DL, although all pre-covid and in business class. They did get dented but thankfully not on the frame/ lip. I know the small dents do add "character." Haven't used them since. Only because I prefer lighter luggage. But I am curious how UA treats them. I heard that some time back, LH and CX would take care loading them on to the aircraft.
I've had two (thanks to UA...) Tumi 19 Degree aluminum suitcases. Dents are a virtual guarantee however certain hubs seem rougher than others (e.g. every trip either has taken through IAD has more consistent and noticeably heavier wear than via ORD, DEN, or EWR). The first one was killed just shy of its 2nd birthday on a trip in to GRB when it arrived at baggage claim with a noticeable crease in it (I'm still not sure how that kind of damage could be done without hydraulics). Though the agent at GRB was reluctant to take the damage report (I think he only did when I made it clear I wasn't leaving without one even if he considered luggage looking like someone tried folding it in half "normal wear and tear" when it got back to Cleveland the baggage service office took one look at it and was like "What did we do to your bag!?! No, that's not normal wear and tear." shipped it off for repair, repair center determined it to be damaged beyond repair and shipped me a brand new one.

I now only use that bag for leisure trips and some international and am using a Pelican case for my business trips (always gets and interesting look when they ask "tools?" at check-in and I respond "no, dirty laundry") and so far it's damage has been of the "character-adding" variety.

But this is also from someone who's done 100 segments so far this year (96 of them with checked luggage) and 138 last year so this isn't the "coddled, few long haul trips per year" life that Tumi was likely anticipating...
