Using a separate Username does not necessarily mean that a separate Membership Rewards account was created, but if the points earned and redeemed by that card were, in fact, using a separate rewards account I can see that once it is closed there is no place for the points to be deposited. In any event, it isn't true that American Express "cannot" process a refund, they can issue a check.
