A reddit thread suggested they were closing the first year double credit loophole. Remember, if you applied say in September you could get 2 sets of credits and cancel the card when it comes up for renewal.
That loophole was closed in May 2017, less than a year after the card was introduced. For those of us who have held the card since 2016, Chase is essentially using the loophole themselves by giving us the credit at the end of December whether we have used it or not.
Maybe there were too many people who were confused about the date calling customer service representatives who were also confused and giving wrong information. Or maybe someone wanted to clean up the special-case code that checks for card opening date before resetting the credit.
At least they’re doing right by giving people the extra 1-11 months of credit.
